“Party Like It’s 1525” invites you to immerse yourself in the vibrant world of Renaissance festivity, filled with dances, melodies, and love songs. Built around a celebration as it might have been 500 years ago, this party offers onlookers a fascinating glimpse into human nature in the early sixteenth century, and its surprising likeness to our modern disposition. Throughout our concert programme, audiences will encounter a number of curious individuals, each sharing their unique stories of love in its many forms. These tales are drawn from some of the earliest collections of printed music in the German language (Öglin 1512, von Aich 1519), and are complemented by recently reconstructed dance tunes (from Hess 1555a), popular European hits from the 1520s, and polyphonic improvisations, all performed with the distinctive sound of authentic town pipers.
[hanse] Pfeyfferey is an ensemble of renaissance wind instrumentalists, specialising in improvised and rediscovered music from around 1500. Music that featured in everyday life in the 15th and 16th centuries – accompanying timeless human experiences such as love, pain, desire, and dance – is given new life in an explosion of joyful sound.
Winners of the 2024 Cambridge Early Music Prize, this is their debut concert in the city, and not be missed.
