Fretwork
Fretwork performs the St Matthew Passion – but perhaps not the version you expect…
Johann Theile’s St Matthew Passion dates from 1673 – predating Bach’s by about fifty years. A student of Heinrich Schütz, Theile’s music has a contrapuntal rigour, but also an imaginative flair that would have pleased his teacher. With solo voices and viols, Theile’s expertise as an operatic composer shines through a Renaissance colour palette.
This intimate (and relatively compact) setting of the familiar story of Christ’s betrayal, crucifixion and resurrection is performed by the world’s leading consort of viols – Fretwork – in its 40th anniversary year, with special guest vocalists.
